I've been testing it a little more and if i 'seek' to a specific byte number before reading the data, I can read parts of it in. Details required :.

Don't say you can't afford to lose it, because chances are you HAVE lost it, â€Ø¯ÙŠÙˆØ« ينيك أخته سعودي. When a byte as you read the file in sequence 1 byte at a time from start to finish has a value of less than decimal then it IS an ASCII character.
Just tested your test script on mac and I get the full text.

Try opening the document with 'Retrieve text from any file' selected in Files of Type. NEVER do this.
