These informants were recognized by the villagers as authorities on Mat Salleh, and consequently the locations chosen for research were based on their advice. Besides investigating Haji Abdul Salam's claims to sainthood and comparing his identity with that of Mat Salleh, this paper also examines the circumstances surrounding Mat Salleh's supposed transformation Kongsi isteri dgn mat salleh a keramat, according to popular folk belief.
Consequently, in this paper I attempt to analyze oral accounts that describe Haji Abdul Salam as a living keramat, while also investigating the popular belief that he was formerly the rebel leader and scourge of the BNBCC, Mat Salleh. Many elderly informants claim to have met Haji Abdul Salam personally and to have witnessed him performing miraculous acts.
During my field study, five stories about the keramat known as Haji Abdul Salam were obtained from west coast villagers ranging in age from 57 to 82 years. All the informants were introduced to the writer by the writer's friends and Sabah Museum staff Kongsi isteri dgn mat salleh had previously conducted research on forts constructed by Mat Salleh in his campaign against the BNBCC, Kongsi isteri dgn mat salleh.
Data collected from each informant was obtained from a single, one-to-one interview conducted in the informant's house. These meetings are said to have occurred during the first half of the twentieth century, from the s through the s, most of them during the last decades of Chartered Company rule. During these sessions, the writer jotted down the informants' personal details and chatted informally with them for periods ranging from one to three hours, in an attempt to elicit stories from them, Kongsi isteri dgn mat salleh.
While giving their accounts of Mat Salleh, Kongsi isteri dgn mat salleh, five informants three west coast Bajau, with one Brunei and one man of mixed Bajau and Brunei descent included tales about Haji Abdul Salam.
