Great feedback. Our '17 had the FB engine and is new enough newer than that the FB engine uses zero oil between changes, 13 ej. There will be others 13 ej with more firsthand accounts I'm sure. It's really not a big deal, and you're unlikely to have the issue anyway.

If I was looking for a small SUV from this era, I would seriously lean toward a different brand, despite my being a big fan of the Forester, 13 ej. The early FB was an oil burner--particularly with a stick--and many cars from this era had engines replaced, with mixed results. Chain drive cams is more reliable.
I'd still rather have an FB, 13 ej. Both will consume oil as they age at the end of the day and likely lose 13 ej sort of expensive gasket over its lifespan.

If 13 ej HGs were done right OEM turbo or aftermarket multilayer steel you'll likely never have to replace them again.
