It is good to be supportive of friends and family, but Maggie takes things to an extreme and downright meddles - with often disastrous results! The reader learns of the horrors of war, WWI in France to be exact. Nay, but you are a people who behave senselessly. Drank too much!
Got it. I still, to this day, have to fight the subconscious urge to get up on a Saturday morning and clean my home from top to bottom - gosh, how I hated that! I don't understand how this won a Pulitzer Paul Bryant. We also see Maggie's undying naivete and dreaminess in how she convinces herself that this state will last forever. Moyes spoon feeds the reader historical information regarding the portrait while simultaneously writing a current day fiction story.

Lovely book! It felt alternately boring and overwrought, and I initially picked this up pretty soon after reading All the Light We Cannot See, and it's really just unfair to authors everywhere to pick up chick-lit historical fiction after picking up Pulitzer Prize-winning historical fiction.
